Common Questions

GlyphStudio maps each Latin letter in your name to a phonetically representative Egyptian hieroglyph using a mono-alphabetic system. For example, A → 𓄿, B → 𓃀, M → 𓅓. The mapping follows conventional Egyptological transliteration conventions. The result is displayed inside a styled cartouche — the oval frame historically used to enclose royal names.

This is a creative and educational approximation. Ancient Egyptians wrote in a consonantal script without strict letter-for-letter equivalents to Latin.

GlyphStudio offers three historically inspired cartouche styles:

  • Old Kingdom — simple oval outline with a thin gold line and plain tie-bar foot, referencing the earliest cartouche forms circa 2686–2181 BCE.
  • New Kingdom — ornate gold-rope border with decorative serekh foot, referencing the elaborate style of Ramesses-era monuments circa 1550–1077 BCE.
  • Ptolemaic — doubled border with decorative inner and outer lines, reflecting the more elaborate cartouches of the Greek-Egyptian period circa 332–30 BCE.

Each style can be combined with three color schemes: Gold on Lapis Blue, Ink on Papyrus, and Red on Sandstone.

The Atlas screen has two discovery methods:

  • Search bar — type the Gardiner code (e.g. G1, A1) or a keyword like "bird" or "eye".
  • Category chips — filter by thematic group: Birds, Mammals, Body Parts, People, Plants, Sky & Earth, Tools, and more.

Tap any sign to open Glyph Detail, which shows the full Unicode codepoint, Gardiner sign number, phonetic value, and a brief description.

Yes. In the Cartouche Studio, tap Save to add the current cartouche to your personal Library. Tap Share to export it as an image using the standard iOS Share Sheet — you can send it to Messages, save to Photos, or share anywhere iOS allows.

All saved cartouches are stored locally on your device. Your Library is in the bottom tab of the app.

No. GlyphStudio is entirely offline. The full hieroglyph database (70 signs), cartouche rendering engine, pharaoh gallery, and all content are bundled inside the app. No internet connection is required at any point. No data is ever sent to external servers.

Each calendar day, a different hieroglyph is featured based on a deterministic rotation through the full sign catalogue. The same day always shows the same glyph — there's no randomness or server call. A "Pharaoh of the Week" rotates similarly on a weekly cycle.

You can tap the featured glyph to open its full Atlas entry, or use the Share button to save the day's glyph as an image.
